The Travel and Tourism diploma will be available from 2010.
The Travel and Tourism Diploma Development Partnership, a tie-up between sector skills councils People 1st and GoSkills, is inviting employers to suggest ideas for the course content in a series of focus groups.
Advantage chief executive John McEwan is spearheading the project as chairman of the steering committee.
People 1st chief executive Brian Wisdom said: “This is the first time the industry will be involved in putting together the curriculum.”
As well as more traditional subjects such as customer service skills, the diploma is likely to include issues affecting travel, such as climate change.
The move has been welcomed after concerns that the industry is failing to attract people with the right skills and attitude.
GoSkills development manager David Summers said: “Within five years, employers will notice school leavers have a greater understanding of the industry.”
