Tabloids Tackling the Diploma and Changes in Education

Posted on | September 18, 2008 |

Recently the Daily Mirror printed an article on, ‘Your Kids’ Education is changing.’

The article was an informative piece mainly question and answer based regarding the changes in the education system and about the new diploma.

Questions included:

  • Why is the Government raising the school leaving age?
  • What’s the difference between a GCSE and a diploma?
  • How do the new qualifications compare to GCSEs and A-Levels?
  • When and where will the diplomas be introduced?

And

  • Why are these changes being introduced?

Granted these are simple, basic questions about the new changes but the answers given are then kept simple, easy to understand and informative.

Answers included:

  • Ministers estimate that around 190,000 young people between the age of 16 and 18 are not in education, employment or training hence rising the leaving age to 18.
  • The new diplomas will be available as an alternative to GCSEs although GCSE math’s and English.  Key differences include that the diplomas aren’t entirely in the classroom and a major part of the course will be practical.
  • The Foundation diploma is equivalent to five GCSEs, the High diploma is equivalent to seven GCSEs, and the Advanced diploma is equivalent to 3.5 A-Levels.
  • Diplomas will be introduced in schools and colleges in 146 areas across England and will offer the diploma to around 20,000 pupils from this month.  More places will begin teaching it as it is phased in from 2009 to 2011.

Finally

  • Changes are being introduced because employers are complaining that many school leavers lack basic skills when they start work.  Skills include, presenting, communication and teamwork.

The article shows that education, diplomas and functional skills are still all hot topics with people wanting to know more about what is changing, when it is changing and how it is all changing.
