Students give big vote of confidence to new ways of learning

Posted on | January 7, 2009 |

What do students think about the diploma?

Craig Mason, 15, a student at Sandhill View School, and Mark Beck, 14, a Farringdon School pupil, are both studying for a Diploma in construction and the built environment.

Craig Said: “I am really enjoying it.  It is better than school because you don’t just sit there listening to the teacher all the time.”

Mark said: “There is a lot more to it that I thought there would be.  I think it is really good – it is a totally new thing.”

The teenager said he enjoyed spending more time out of the classroom.

Emily Heron, 14, a pupil at Oxclose School, and Leighton Porter, 14, a St Robert of Newminster student, are both doing the diploma in engineering.

Emily, who hopes to become a mechanical engineer in the RAF, said she had no problem being the only girl on the course.

She said: “I had always shown an interest in engineering and really wanted to do the diploma when I was picked by my school.  I really like the hands on way of learning.  It is totally different from when you are at school.  You get treated much more like an adult than when you where in the classroom.”

Leighton said he really enjoyed his course because it gave students the opportunity to learn all about the different aspects of engineering.
