University work call for pupils

Posted on | March 12, 2009 |

More teenagers should study university modules alongside their A-levels, a body representing schools and colleges has suggested.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust said the initiative, already happening in some schools, prepares young people for higher education.

The scheme is one of several designed to encourage pupils to consider going on to university.

The Westminster government wants 50% of young people to enter higher education.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT), which has 5,000 members among schools and organisations, is discussing ways of encouraging pupils at a conference in London.

Other ways schools can work with universities to encourage pupils, it says, include:

  • Get students to think about university from the start of secondary school
  • Build links between schools and universities, for example, by children attending lectures
  • Give pupils personal support in choosing a university and degree course
  • Provide students with the right personal, learning and thinking skills for university

Monkseaton High School, in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, is one of those already experimenting with students taking university modules in maths. It works in partnership with the Open University.

The school also does a lot of work with Newcastle University and is currently running a pilot scheme where the university’s science faculty offers Monkseaton students studying “Stem” subjects the opportunity to gain a place on their courses by studying relevant Open University subjects, rather than through the traditional A-level route.

Elizabeth Reid, SSAT chief executive, said: “There are some excellent partnerships in place, providing young people with essential information, advice and guidance.

“We must now build on these successful practices so that every school is linked to a university.”

Minister of State for Higher Education David Lammy said: “Currently 48 universities are sponsors or partners in Academies and nearly 100 are working with trust schools or planning to do so but we must work together towards more partnerships.

“These partnerships provide universities with a unique opportunity to get in at ground level to develop and nurture the undergraduates of tomorrow.

“Yet schools and teachers must also play their part and become a driving force for learners’ progression beyond the school gates.”
